Summer isn't over
Art Institute of Chicago
“The light constantly changes, and that alters the atmosphere and beauty of things every minute.”
— Claude Monet
It was the Impressionists who showed us that light isn't just something to observe: it must be experienced. Stepping out of their studios to paint en plein air, they chased the fleeting glow of changing skies. It’s this soft quality of light that marks the arrival of a fifth, hidden season.
Too often dismissed as merely "late summer," she is not 'late' at all (she is perfectly on time). A short season of golden hour, long shadows and lingering warmth that belongs to the Impressionists, the romantics, and the light-obsessives alike. For those who crave the softer qualities beyond the intensity of peak summer: your season is nearly here.
Go gently.
Claude Monet, Le Grand Canal, Venice
Lake Garda and Venice
The muse of Renoir and Monet paired with the muse of the poets: an Italian itinerary designed for September when crowds quiet down, and the light softens. Come October, it's still warm enough for late-night gelato and a sunset spritz.
St. Ives
Many theories attempt to explain St. Ives' unique quality of light, but forget the speculation; this is one to experience firsthand. Catch sunset from Porthmeor Beach or St. Nicholas Chapel, and you'll see why generations of artists made this peninsula their studio.
Côte d'Azur
For warmth that lingers after summer, head to the French Riviera. Specifically, Menton, a lesser-known spot that glows from the inside out, with honeyed buildings that catch the Côte d'Azur light.
Giverny (Monet's house)
Immerse yourself in the colors of Monet's house and gardens, located in easy-to-reach Normandy. You might not get the warmth of the south, but time it right and you'll dodge the summer crowds just in time to watch the nasturtiums and purple dahlias come into bloom.
Lakeside Switzerland
Switzerland's certified sun trap, Locarno, is an Italian-speaking lakeside retreat where palm trees meet mountains. Beyond the waterfront, the best sunset vantage point is a rewarding hike through the lush ravine to the peaceful Madonna del Sasso monastery.
