Frequently asked questions about Austria

What’s the best time to visit Austria?

May to September is the best time to visit Austria for hiking, lakes and city sightseeing, with the warmest weather and longest days. December to March is the best time for skiing, when the Alps are covered in snow, with peak ski season from December to February. May, June and September offer a quieter, more affordable alternative to peak summer, with mild weather and thinner crowds. There are highlights year-round: Vienna's ball season fills the city with formal galas from January to February, the Salzburg Festival brings opera and classical music to Mozart's home city every summer, and Christmas markets and Krampus parades take over towns across the country from late November.

What are the best things to do in Austria?

The best things to do in Austria include exploring Vienna's palaces and museums, hiking or skiing in the Alps, and visiting Salzburg's old town.

  • Discovering Vienna's imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn and the Hofburg, coffee house culture, and museums like the Kunsthistorisches

  • Hiking or skiing in the Austrian Alps, around resorts like Innsbruck and Zell am See

  • Wandering Salzburg's UNESCO-listed old town, birthplace of Mozart, and following the film trail from The Sound of Music

  • Exploring Hallstatt, a lakeside village in the Salzkammergut region, and touring its centuries-old salt mine above the town

  • Wine tasting and cycling in the Wachau Valley, past the Baroque towers of Melk Abbey

  • Visiting the Grossglockner High Alpine Road through Hohe Tauern National Park, past Austria's highest peak

  • Crossing the Brenner Pass by rail between Innsbruck and Italy, one of Europe's great Alpine rail routes

  • Riding the scenic Semmering and Arlberg railways, both engineering landmarks through the Alps

  • Taking a guided tour Eisriesenwelt by carbide lamp through glittering ice formations, the world's largest accessible ice cave, near Salzburg

  • Soaking in the thermal springs of Bad Gastein, a former spa town built into an Alpine gorge

How can I get to Austria by train?

Austria is reachable from London via a change of trains in Brussels or Paris, with high-speed and Nightjet sleeper train services connecting onward through Germany or Switzerland to Vienna and other major cities. Within Austria, an extensive rail network connects towns and cities throughout the country.

Frequently asked questions about Byway trips

What's included?

Our price includes all transport, accommodation and a personalized itinerary for your trip. Byway's travel experts are also available on WhatsApp throughout for disruption support and travel tips.

Are flights included?

No, flights to Europe aren't included, but all transport and accommodation once you're here is. Short-haul flights are highly carbon-intensive, and traveling around Europe by train, ferry or bus is an easy, enjoyable alternative.

Can I upgrade my hotel room?

Yes. Different hotel options are available to choose from on the trip page, and any room upgrade requests can be added in the booking form. Our team will then find upgrade options and discuss them with you.

Do I have to start and finish in the same city?

No. If you'd like to leave Europe from a different city, our concierge team can build you a custom one-way trip.

Can I pay in US dollars?

Yes. Prices on our trip pages are shown in your local currency by default, or you can select your preferred currency, including USD, CAD, EUR or CHF, from the dropdown in the top right corner of the trip page. The payment page will always show the price in your chosen currency.

How much luggage is included?

You can generally bring as much luggage as you can carry, as long as it fits in the luggage racks or overhead space. On Eurostar, UK and most European trains, the standard allowance is two large bags and one smaller item, provided you can manage them yourself; let us know in advance if you're planning to bring anything oversized. Since you may need to change stations or walk to hotels, packing light makes the journey more comfortable.

How do my tickets get delivered?

Most European train tickets are digital and sent to you by email. A few, including tickets for Spain, Portugal and some EuroCity trains, require paper tickets, which can be mailed to a hotel on your itinerary.

Is it a guided group trip?

No, Byway trips are self-guided, not part of a group tour. You'll have on-demand personalized support by WhatsApp, text or phone throughout, so all the planning and booking is done for you, and any disruptions are handled without you having to worry about them.

First-time skiing in Zell am See

The trip was one of the things that was really memorable. We were in the buffet car and the attendant said, “why don't you sit in this seat right by the window". It was a perfect spot. Suddenly there was a lake in front of us and snowy mountains, all this beautiful scenery. It was at that moment we looked at each other and we knew that we were on vacation.
