Europe 101

So you’re interested in vacationing by train in Europe and the UK? Great! Here's everything you need to know before you go: from visas to tipping, currencies to tourist taxes, and even what to pack.
Train travel Europe 101

Frequently asked questions

What’s included?

Our price includes all of your European vacation transport, accommodation and a personalised itinerary for your trip. You'll also have our travel experts on WhatsApp for disruption support and travel tips.

Are flights included?

We don’t include flights to Europe but do include all transport and accommodation when you get here. Short-haul flights are very carbon-intensive but thankfully traveling around Europe by train, ferry or bus is super easy and enjoyable.

Can I upgrade my hotel room?

You can choose different hotels on the trip page, and if you want to upgrade your room, there is a space in the booking form to let us know. Our team will then find upgrades and discuss these with you.

Do I have to start and finish in the same city?

Although we advocate for going flight free at every opportunity, we know that you might want to leave Europe from a different city. Our Concierge team can build you a custom one way trip.

Can I pay in US dollars?

Yes, you can! All prices on our online trip pages should be shown in your local currency. If not, you can select whichever currency you’d like to pay in (e.g., USD, CAD, EUR, CHF) using the dropdown in the top right corner of the trip page beside the search icon. In both instances, the price on the payment page will be shown in your local currency.

Baggage allowance?

One of the great things about travelling by rail is that, with a few limitations, you can pretty much take as much luggage as you can carry! For Eurostar, UK, and most European trains, the general rule is that you can bring two large bags and one smaller item. Unlike airlines, there's no charge for excess luggage, and as long as your luggage can fit in the luggage racks or overhead spaces, you'll be able to carry it with you. Note that there are exceptions for oversized luggage like surfboards, musical instruments, or bicycles, so please do not plan to take anything other than suitcases with you.

How do my tickets get delivered?

The vast majority of European train ticketing can be digital, but some (Spain, Portugal, and a handful of EuroCity trains) will need paper tickets which can be mailed to a hotel you’ll be staying at.

Is it a guided group trip?

These are self-guided tours, not part of a group. They include on-demand personalized support via WhatApp, text or phone. Think of it like DIY vacation, except all the planning and booking have been done for you, and you don’t need to worry about disruptions.
