Journal: Why take the local train?

When it comes to rail travel in Europe, sleek high-speed services and famous tourist trains often steal the spotlight. But there’s something to be said about regional trains: some follow the same picturesque routes as their counterparts or transport you to the big cities, while others take interesting detours. But all offer the chance to soak up views, explore lesser-visited towns and support local infrastructure (and many are included on Interrail/Eurail passes.

Read our guide to find out why local trains might just be the best trains in Europe, and then discover six of the most scenic train journeys in Europe.

Frequently asked questions about train holidays

Why choose a train holiday over flying?

Train holidays offer an immersive and relaxed way to travel, where moving through the landscape—rather than flying over it—allows you to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Unlike flying, trains take you straight into the heart of cities, as well as smaller and more remote stations that planes can’t reach—all without the hassle of airport security and check-in.. Choosing train travel over plane travel is also one of the most impactful sustainable choices an individual can make.

Are train holidays suitable for families?

Yes! Train holidays are ideal for families. Children can move around the train freely, enjoy the changing landscape, and make use of table space ideal for colouring, games and train picnics! Byway trips include options for family rooms, with child-friendly routes and relaxed schedules. Add specific timing requests to your booking, or get in touch with the team before booking.

How do I plan a Byway train holiday?

We know that every traveller is different. There are several ways to get a trip that’s perfect for you.

  • Browse and edit pre-designed itineraries on our website
  • Design your own trip from scratch using our map
  • Contact us for a custom trip designed by our Trip design team

Are train holidays environmentally friendly?

Yes. Travelling by train emits much less CO₂ than flying. We’ve calculated the estimated emissions for all our journeys (shown at the top of each itinerary), compared to flying and driving. You can read more about our positive impact in our latest Impact report.

Can I customise my train holiday itinerary?

You can! Every Byway trip is fully customisable. Once you've got the basic itinerary (either from designing your own trip on our map or finding a pre-designed trip), you can edit it straight from the itinerary page. Add or remove nights, switch up your rooms or hotels, or shift your dates. For more complex itinerary changes, get in touch.

Will Byway book a Eurail or Interrail pass for a train holiday?

Yes, if it’s the most cost-effective option for your trip. Our tech compares the cost of using a Eurail or Interrail pass versus booking individual train tickets, and selects whichever offers the best value for your specific journey. Either way, your personalised journey guide will clearly organise your tickets, and our support team will be on hand to ensure you feel confident using your pass or tickets throughout your trip.

How far in advance should I book my train holiday?

Generally, the sooner the better! This means you’ll have access to the best possible prices and availability for your holiday (although we don't advise booking over a year in advance, as many hotels have not released their availability). In most cases, booking six months or more in advance is ideal. However, if you're more flexible on price, dates, and hotel options, all of our trips have the option to book as late as ten days prior to departure, where available.

What happens if I miss my train?

This depends on the reason for the missed departure. On many of your train journeys, you’ll be able to just hop on to the next available train if your missed departure is because of a delay or cancellation on your previous train. If, however, the reason you missed your departure is not due to a late-running or cancelled connection, you may need to purchase a new ticket at your own expense. We’ll set up a WhatsApp group and give you access to our out of hours emergency telephone number while you’re travelling, so you’ll be able to get in touch for advice should you miss one of your scheduled departures.
