Travel partners

For two decades, Macs has pioneered sustainable travel - it’s at the heart of everything they do. Their walking and cycling tours are designed to tread lightly on the planet, offering a more sustainable alternative to bus tours and cruise ships. Macs are committed to supporting local economies by choosing locally owned accommodations, ensuring that the lion’s share of what their customers spend benefits the communities they visit. By promoting flexible, independent travel, they also tackle the issues of over-tourism and congestion, helping their adventurers explore the great outdoors away from the crowds.

Flight-free travel allows you to add another level of adventure to your trip. Skip traffic jams and passport control lines and discover the joy of travelling scenic landscapes by rail.

Travelling by train is also one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport. For example, on your way to Italy, you could enjoy a night’s stopover in the beautiful cities of Paris and Nice. Deciding to take the train from London to Italy produces only 211kg of CO2 compared to 965kg of CO2 if you choose to take a flight.

Why take the train?

Travel Europe by Train

Most places in Europe are accessible by train. So why wouldn’t you choose to train it? All aboard and chug-chug-chug your way across several countries where exquisite scenery rolls by. With front row seats to rolling Scottish hills, chequered French countryside, or snow-tipped peaks in Austria, trains are a great way to see more.

Trains are also one of the most sustainable forms of transport. For example, to travel from London to Florence by train, it would produce just 3kg of carbon – which is the equivalent to eating 1 cheeseburger. If you took the same journey by air, that would produce approx. 228kg. That’s enough energy to power the lights of the Eiffel Tower for 3 days!

Travel by Boat or Ferry

It’s not often you get to see views from this perspective. And while most destinations can be reached by train, there are some that require a stint across the waters to get there. Travelling by boat immerses you in refreshing salty sea air with the calming, rhythmic sound of the waves. Float over the Irish Sea to the Emerald Isle or hop on a ferry to the Channel Islands. It’s a peaceful way to start and end your adventure.

More about Macs

As part of their journey towards achieving B Corp accreditation, Macs are making strides to control their carbon footprint through achievable measures. Their goal is to reduce carbon emissions from business operations by 5% compared to 2023. And one of the ways they’re aiming to achieve this is by collaborating with Byway. To reach a shared goal of encouraging adventurers to opt for alternative transportation methods like trains or boats instead of flying, promoting a more sustainable way to travel.

By removing the need to jump on a jet, trips are even more planet-friendly, plus you’re skipping the airport madness. You’ll often find the journey to your destination can be just as enjoyable as the adventure itself. Just settle down in your seat and watch the world go by.
