What goes into the price of a Byway trip?

Understanding how a trip is priced is an important part of choosing how to travel, especially when journeys span multiple countries, transport providers and nights away. Below, I explain how Byway prices our trips, what is included, and how pricing reflects the real price of accommodation and transport, alongside the expertise, technology, and support that make complex land and sea travel simpler and more reliable.

What is included in a Byway trip

How Byway calculates prices

The base costs are determined by your accommodation and transport bookings. We negotiate trade rates with accommodation and transport providers to deliver the best rates to you. We then add a small operating cost to the trip to cover our organisation, routing and services.

If you’ve ever tried to book a multi-country rail trip yourself, you know the headache: conflicting timetables, missed connections, and fragmented tickets. Byway prices cover the people, technology and expertise that solve the headache of multi-country travel for you.

What is included in a Byway trip

  • Our expertise: Local knowledge from our team about journeys, stays and experiences that tailors our advice and trains our technology.

  • Our technology: The engine that builds your route away from the crowds and keeps all your tickets in one place without you having to deal with multiple suppliers.

  • In-trip support: On-demand phone and WhatsApp support and in-trip guides with all  your accommodation and transport details in one place.

  • Disruption protection: Our disruption guarantee, which means we rearrange your travel and accommodation to turn a disruption hiccup into a highlight and get you back on track at no cost to you.

Why Byway trip prices vary

  • Seasonality: Prices for accommodation and tickets are higher when demand is high. We suggest travelling outside July to September for better prices. Local events and activities, like skiing, also affect prices.

  • Timing: Booking under six weeks from departure adds a small premium to cover price spikes and the manual cost of securing last-minute tickets.

  • Complexity: Operational costs depend on trip complexity. If a trip is straightforward and easier for us to build, we pass those simplicity savings back to you.

  • First class: Digital systems do not yet support seamless first-class booking, so we factor in the manual intervention required to upgrade multiple journeys.

Solo travellers

Prices are usually displayed per person, assuming two people share a room. For solo travellers, the per-person price usually increases because the room cost is split between two people. To help, we always look for single bedrooms which are more economical than double rooms for solo occupancy, and our solo trips page includes our favourite economical solo trips. We don’t offer shared accommodation options (e.g. dormitories or shared sleeper train cabins) for safety and quality reasons.

Who your operational costs support

Our team is small but mighty. We have trip and technology designers, ticket bookers, in-trip guide crafters, disruption supporters, marketers, and people and systems to support it all, paying the bills and keeping the lights on. Unlike many travel businesses, we prefer to nurture our team's development rather than rely on seasonal workers. This facilitates long-term relationships and helps us deepen our knowledge of slow travel.

We keep our office costs down by working securely from home and our travels, meeting just two days each month in our London office. We invest those savings back into our people:

  • Fair pay: Every team member is paid at least London Living Wage. Our highest to lowest salary ratio is 4:1, compared to 106:1 in FTSE100 companies.

  • Sustainable leave: We provide Sustainable Travel Leave, Cycle to Work schemes and annual Interrail passes to help our team travel the way you do.

  • Remote support: We provide work-from-home grants to support professional home office set-ups.

The bottom line

DIY slow travel might be cheaper when all goes smoothly, but we provide the expertise and support of a personal travel planner throughout booking and travel. We don't aim to be the cheapest; we aim to be the best way to travel by land and sea.
