An hour or so from downtown Lisbon by train, Sintra is a kaleidoscope of colourful architecture and lush forest amid the cool western mountains. Its a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-do day trip.
Hop onto the number 28 tram and tour Lisbon in this wood-panelled carriage. Stop off at Miradouro das Portas do Sol to have a drink, or Miradouro de Nossa Senhora do Monte, a churchyard viewpoint.
